So the government of the UK bent to international pressure and issued lockdown orders, basically shutting down the party.
Then…
The same government had parties.
In the meantime, SOME PEOPLE took the lockdown orders seriously and actually obeyed them, not realizing that the government didn’t really MEAN what they were saying.
What a fucking surprise.
Any normal person who hadn’t completely lost their shit realized at a certain point that there was a mass hysteria going on that precluded agency on the part of any authority, pretty much everywhere in the world except for Sweden, which constitutionally seems to have been incapable of imposing lockdowns at that time.
This is to say that sovereignty was NOT located at 10 Downing Street. It is unclear where sovereignty is presently located. It was certainly not there at the time in question. The government did what every government did. They oppressed the entire population with ridiculous rules that were useless and caused massive harm to the same population.
But in the case of the UK government, they said fuckit, and had a party anyway.
This is the definition of cynicism.
At the same time, I find it hard to fault them. These are people who are in power, and power hungry. Did anyone think that the people in government were NOT cynical and power hungry? What the fuck do you think motivates people for political power?
I think it is completely plausible to fault the government for being a bunch of cynical power hungry disgusting money grubbing elitist scumbags. But for the parties, no. They did the right thing. Any reasonable human being living in London at that time should have disobeyed the rules. It’s called civil disobedience and it is a very important tool in the arsenal of any right thinking citizen.
When the law is wrong, you should not obey the law. You don’t have to go out and demonstrate, that’s performative bullshit. But you do your own thing, on the low-down, without making a big deal about it. Civil disobedience is the way.
The fact that the 10 Downing Street people were doing civil disobedience on their own selves is actually hilarious. It just shows you how much actual power they’ve got. They are there for the party. They are all YOLO. They know their time is limited and they are making the best of it.
What were you expecting?
