The official confused view on the Jew Face bruhaha is as follows.
Acting is about acting. The actor performed actions that put together constitute a plot and character, etc. It makes zero difference who the “real” person is behind the scenes. That’s why it’s called acting. The actor is good or bad or suitable or not suitable for the “role” because of only one thing; their capacity to perform the required actions honestly.
Being Jewish isn’t really a discrete action. There might be many actions that make up the characteristic of being Jewish. If we are to witness / view someone performing these actions over time, they might take on the character of being Jewish.
The idea that an actor needs to be a Jewish person, in order to honestly perform actions called on in a script, strategically oriented to the production of a cinematic character of “being Jewish”, is ridiculous.
True, I am against method acting and think that it’s completely ridiculous.
(In my opinion, Jews should be above this kind of woke cancel culture bullshit. Hey Jews, if you haven’t noticed, this woke stuff isn’t on your side. This is not the civil rights movement, it’s something completely different.)
The same is true for writing, in my opinion. The entire point of writing is to explore areas that are alien territory. The act of writing is itself an education, an exploration of the unknown territory of hearts and souls and identities and characters. I’m pretty sure that’s also true for acting.
Wouldn’t it be completely annoying if you were an actor eternally condemned to act yourself? Like a billion John Malkovitches. Imagine a fiction writer that was only allowed to write their own autobiography?
Everything would become dreck pretty quick.
Now, as for Whoopi Goldberg, I only think it’s half funny that she took the Goldberg name because her mother said only Jews can make it as actors. However at this point she can give Goldberg back and keep her Johnson.
